So bad that an apparent sex abuser
paying off an extortionist $3.5 million could become the speaker of the
House, the third highest-ranking official in the country, serving longer
in that position than any other Republican.
That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think about the Denny Hastert affair.
Where are the checks and balances? Where are the muckraking reporters? After all, this guy was a Republican – meaning the press has no excuses!
The next thing that comes to mind for me is how a schoolteacher and wrestling coach turned politician could earn enough to pay off $3.5 million to a blackmailer.
I found the answer, and it’s not surprising. He turned a handsome profit on some Illinois farmland that he just happened to secure an earmark for the federal government to buy up to turn into a controversial highway.
